At the very beginning of the architecture culture & history class, we have to form a group of 4 to preceed our precedent study project throughout the semester. I was glad to be a part of my group with Wong Jian Kai, Yiew Qunhe and Gan Chin Bong. At the same time, it was also a great opportunity to get knowing each other deeper.

We have to select a historical building which will be our research building of the project. After a discussion, we chosed Abu Simbel Temple in Egypt as our topic and start the journey to discover the mysterious Egyptian culture as well as the breath-taking Egyptian architecture.

LET'S FORM A GROUP
and
SELECT A BUILDING
History is a relentless master. It has no present, only the past rushing into the future. To try to hold fast is to be swept aside.

ARCHITECTURE CULTURE & HISTORY 1

In this session, we start researching on the ancient Egyptian culture and their concept in architecuture and building design. From the book and the Internet, we presicely understand their intentions and concept of constructing the temple building as well as the essence meaning of life and afterlife in ancient Egyptian's views.

Meanwhile, we learnt a lot of specific architectural terms and vocabularies when we did our research on the style, structure as well as the principles of the ancient Egyptian temple. It is beneficial for us in the further tasks and architecture studies.

TASK 1
ESSAY WRITING

A totally hand-drawn and manually produced analysis board should be done by each of the group member in this session. In the board making process, I gained the knowledge about how to show and present what I understand with the selected building by skeches and technical drawings on the A2 size presentation board.

Furthermore, we also have to include the analysis we have done before by using diagrams. In this part, I learnt the proper way to do an architectural documentation and also tried to use the specific architectural vocabularies I have learnt to produce a clearer and professional building analysis.

TASK 2
INDIVIDUAL ANALYSIS PRESENTATION BOARD

The best way to understand the sturcture and elements in a building is model making. In this part, my teammates and I was using balsa timber to do a precedent study model of our selected building. Through the model, we tried to show the significant elements of Abu Simbel Temples as well as its important structure and components.

Throughout the process, my model making skills were much more improved than before. At the same time, I also gained a priceless working experiences with my teammates and understand how vital team spirit is. In addition, I think our model still have to be improved as there are some imperfections in the part of cross section analysis.

TASK 3
MODEL MAKING

In the last part of precedent study, we had our presentation in the class. In the presentation, we made a conclusion of our works and tried our best to show our knowledge as well as our research result about the Abu Simbel Temples. In the activity, I gained the another presentation experience and it was also a golden opportunity for me to honk my presentation skills.

TASK 4
VERBAL PRESENTATION

Throughout the precedent study of the Abu Simbel Temples, I gained a lot of knowledge about the historical architecture works in the past and how it influences the developement of human civilization in the future. I cherish the time I worked with my teammates and also feel grateful to my tutor, Ms. Anida, who helps us a lot in our project pregression. Last but not least, it was a fantastic and awesome project in the semester 1.
